When a family-run bookstore endures for decades or a local café becomes a beloved weekend destination, these businesses become more than economic contributors—they become cornerstones of Evanston’s identity. Small business owners, many of whom live and raise their families here, actively strengthen our schools, parks, and neighborhoods. A thriving small business community is essential to preserving our unique local character and fostering a vibrant city.
After speaking with numerous small business owners, I’ve identified key areas where Evanston can do better:
- Revisiting parking policies: Evanston is the only city on the North Shore that charges for street parking. While this might make sense in the busy downtown area to encourage turnover, it deters visitors in quieter areas like Central Street. The minimal revenue generated from parking fees is outweighed by the loss in tax revenue when businesses struggle due to decreased foot traffic.
- Supporting employees of small businesses: The city should allocate a reasonable number of resident-only parking permits for employees of Evanston’s small businesses, making it easier for them to work locally without undue financial strain.
- Addressing vacant storefronts: Rising property taxes are a major barrier to emerging businesses. By adopting more fiscally responsible policies, we can help reduce overhead costs and encourage new businesses to flourish.
- Streamlining Business Permits: Simplify and expedite the permitting process for new businesses to allow them to ramp up and start operations quickly, reducing unnecessary delays and encouraging entrepreneurship. Some of our small business owners cite it taking 1-2 years to open their doors because of our slow permitting process.
By tackling these issues, Evanston can create a more supportive environment for its small businesses, ensuring they remain vibrant contributors to our community.
